The striking apearance of Amazon Limestone is caused by the presence of Sinoceras fossils, which were rocket-shaped marine Cephalopods that lived 440 million years ago. The three-dimensional fossils vary in size, color and striation and their ancient origins make the stone wholly unique. About 10% of the quarried Amazon Limestone contains larger concentrations of fossils of varying sizes. The photo below shows an unusually high concentration of larger fossils. The majority of the stone only contains scattered smaller fossils.
